A few weeks ago Jacinta was blessed with an answer to her prayers. One Sunday as she was preparing to go to church she saw her mother and four other family members preparing themselves as if they were going somewhere. She asked out of curiosity where they were going. The mother replied on behalf of the others that they were coming to church with her. On that Sunday her mother and four other members gave their lives to the Lord. Please pray for them that her mother be discipled in the faith and that she becomes a good model for her children especially for Jacinta. Jacinta has brought six of her peers from her neighbourhood to the church in the last two months. “It is our prayer” said Pastor Grace “that through this sponsorship Jacinta’s family may experience His glorious riches and He may strengthen Jacinta’s family with power through faith that they may have understanding to grasp how wide and long a high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge” (Eph 3:16-10).
Zambia is one of Africa’s nations hardest hit by HIV/AIDS. With 10 million people, about 1.1 million children under the age of 18 are orphaned. About 58% of the population earns less than $1 per day, so families, churches, communities and schools are overstretched in their efforts to care for children. Many households are now headed by children as young as 13, who are forced to stop education they need to take care of their younger siblings. Ridge Point partners with Jubilee Centre, a Christian Non-Government Organization dedicated to empowering churches, communities and their leaders to grow spiritually, flourish physically and have a voice in the world. Jubilee Centre is often referred to as a “Christian think tank with legs.”
Children have been greatly affected by the AIDS epidemic. Thousands are abandoned due to stigma or a lack of resources, while others run away because they have been mistreated. Some 30% of children are already orphaned. Ridge Point, through a holistic Child Sponsorship program, funds the care and education of orphans that have been identified by local pastors as needing assistance. Each month, $25 is provided for the families caring for these children. This money provides hope, school provisions, nutrition support and economic empowerment for every child within the program and beyond. Local pastors are assisted by Jubilee Centre to coach the families from their congregations in budgeting, parenting and spiritual discipleship. By 2013 we hope to be assisting one or more church schools within Jubilee Centre’s network. We are looking for teachers, principals, or people who have an educational background to assist us or join a short term team to Zambia.
The HIV/AIDS epidemic has a wide range of socio-economic impacts including falling life expectancy and declining household income if a breadwinner is unable to work due to illness or the need to care for sick relatives. A major constraint to treatment and care of people living with HIV/AIDS is the critical shortage of health care workers. With only 1 doctor and 23 nurses per 10,000 (WHO 2004), Home Based Care is critical. Over 35% of Zambia’s healthcare facilities are run by Faith Based Organizations. Ridge Point works with Jubilee Centre’s Director of Home Based Care who coordinates the development of volunteer teams in all partner churches. Pastors and key volunteers are trained and empowered to develop more volunteers who then care for, minister to and protect HIV/AIDS victims, orphans, child-led homes and others who are at risk. Currently there are over 1,500 community and church volunteers. We are seeking experienced medical professionals to serve with us on a short term medical team to Zambia.
The local church is God’s “Plan A” to redeem the world. There is no “Plan B”. The local church is the most effective delivery system of care and empowerment. Jubilee’s calling is simple – strengthen the local church. The result is metamorphic – changed lives, families, communities, and countries. Ridge Point’s heart is to work with Churches that think like Jesus, communities that love like Jesus and commerce that serves like Jesus. Partnering with Jubilee Centre provides an annual Pastor Leadership Conference for its network pastors. Each year the training focuses on a different module on biblical leadership principles that empower the pastors to make practical application of the biblical truths immediately. We are seeking people who have experience teaching bible studies or workshops as we investigate expanding into areas such as youth ministry, women’s ministry, marriage and/or parenting workshops.
Through our partner Jubilee Centre, HOPE is being spread through the local churches. Working together with local churches, we are providing jobs, training and education for those that would otherwise be forgotten. Consider a sponsorship or participating in an upcoming trip in 2013!
